An den Bedienungselementen können zu Undichtheiten führen. Für das Kriterium “Wasserdicht” gibt es (nur in Deutschland) DIN-Normen. Diese DIN-Norm legt fest, dass Uhren im Neuzustand, also in den Räumen des Herstellers, einen bestimmten Grad von Wasserdichtheit haben müssen. Sie müssen widerstandsfähig sein gegen Schweiss, Spritzwasser und Regen und wenigstens in einem Meter Wassertiefe dicht bleiben. Solche Uhren können beim Händewaschen getragen werden. Bei Schwimmbewegungen, bei Schlägen auf die Wasseroberfläche und durch Temperaturwechsel (Dusche, Sauna, Strand) werden sehr schnell Drücke bis zu 10 Bar an den Dichtungen erreicht. Die Angabe “Wasserdicht” oder “Water Resistant” mit dem zusätzlichen Hinweis z. 2 atm oder 30 m bzw. 2 atm bedeutet nichts, weil in keiner DIN-Norm geregelt. Daher weisen die Hersteller bei wasserdichten Uhren nach DIN 8310 z. Water Resistant 30 m bzw. 3atm in den immer beigefügten Gebrauchsanleitungen darauf hin, dass die zugesicherten Eigenschaften nicht für Duschen, Baden oder Schwimmen gilt, sonder die Uhr lediglich vor Spritzwasser, z. Regen oder beim Autowaschen, geschützt ist. Auch weitergehende Zusicherungen wie z. Water Resistant bis 50m bzw. 5 atm garantieren keinen absoluten Schutz gegen das Eindringen von Wasser z. Beim Duschen, Schnorcheln oder Tauchen bis zu der angegebenen Tiefe von 50 m. Erst bei den sog. Taucheruhren nach DIN 8306 mit der Angabe Water Resistant 100 m bzw. 10 atm oder höher ist ein verlässlicher Schutz vor Wasserschäden bis zu den angegebenen Prüfdrücken (10 bar oder mehr) auch bei schnell wechselnden Gebrauchsbelastungen der Uhr durch unterschiedliche Wassertemperaturen oder -Drücke gegeben. Prüfverfahren und – Geräte Wichtig für alle Dichtheitsangaben ist, dass sie nur zum Zeitpunkt der Prüfung gelten und auch nur unter den in Deutschland nach DIN festgelegten Prüfbedingungen. Für die Prüfung auf Wasserdichtheit setzt man spezielle Geräte ein, die in unterschiedlichen Bereichen von Prüfdrücken und nach unterschiedlichen Methoden arbeiten.
